Data released today from ContractHireAndLeasing.com shows that the VW Golf was the most enquired about new car in December. Almost a quarter of all Golf enquiries were for the plug-in-hybrid 1.4 TSI GTE model propelling it into the top spot.
Unprecedented demand for the hybrid model has led to extended delivery times and Volkswagen have temporarily closed the order books for the hybrid model.
German brands dominated the top 10 most enquired about new cars with both Audi and Mercedes-Benz featuring 3 times, showing consumers continue to see them as brands of luxury and quality.
Paul Harrison, Head of Strategic Partnerships at ContractHireAndLeasing.com said ‘’The GTE shows that if manufacturers can transfer electric propulsion to recognisable and popular models, then consumers are willing to move away from traditional engines’’
Figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show the popularity of electrified cars reached a record high in 2017 with almost 120,000 alternatively fuelled vehicles entering the marketplace – a 34.8% increase. UK consumers buy more plug-in cars than anywhere else in Europe making Britain a key market for these vehicles.
